Low Vision Solutions
What does large print, color coding, big buttons, audible cues, and magnification have in common? They are all possible solutions for people experiencing vision loss.

Large Print
Many of your favorite books and magazines are available in large print or on tape. Large print checks and check registers make bill paying easier, and you can continue enjoying your favorite card game by using large print playing cards. Display clocks, watches, and kitchen timers are also designed with large print, and can be found at your local variety store.

Large Print keyboards or keyboard overlays can help reduce frustration while using your computer.

Color coding
Contrasting colors can work well in the kitchen. Use light objects against dark backgrounds and dark objects against light backgrounds. Experiment to find the colors you see best. For example, when pouring dark liquids, such as coffee or tea, use a light colored cup, placed on a dark colored background, or when pouring light liquids, such as milk use a contrasting colored cup, placed on a light background. But don’t stop with the liquids. Try using a light cutting board for dark foods, and a dark color mixing bowl when combining light colored ingredients, such as flour or sugar.

Big Buttons
The bigger the buttons the better, you say. But now, it’s not just large buttons that are helpful with various daily living needs, there are additional features that combine to make life even better. You can find large button telephones with caller ID and amplification; additionally they can come with Braille and speakerphone and the ever essential answering systems. No home would be complete without the glowing large button remote control, it can control TVs, VCRs, cable boxes, satellite dishes and DVD players. Calculators are available with not only large input numbers, but also large display numbers that make it very easy to see your results, but wait… perhaps you prefer one that also talks. When you are determining where to put all these helpful devices in your home or office, should you need to measure for the correct placement, would it be handy to have a measuring tape that allowed you to feel the markings? These may not really be considered big buttons, however they can be just as helpful. Measuring tapes are available with eyelets at every inch and half inch; two eyelets mark every foot. With so many items now available with large buttons, display magnification and voice output, the decision making process may be difficult. Count on Access Technologies, Inc. to help you with your determination needs, whether it’s a need to “borrow” from our Device Loan Program, or need for more research and information, the Assistive Technology Specialists are here to help you.

Audible Cues

Imagine a handy pocket timer and pill minder all in one, hopefully then you won’t need the talking thermometer. Just a simple sound to remind you of an appointment or that it’s time for you medication. In your home you may find life easier with a talking clock or watch, and did you know that there are talking thermostats that come with audible instructions for use and will announce the day, time, room temperature and the temperature setting?

Magnification
Do your eyes feel tired and fatigued from reading or while crafting? Sheet magnifiers, handheld magnifying glasses, and electronic magnifiers are all possible solutions for your vision fatigue and daily living needs.

Available in a variety of sizes and styles, handheld magnifiers are designed for their portability and efficiency. Do you find yourself squinting to read a menu at the restaurant, or to find your favorite television listing? Many times eyeglasses alone are not necessarily the right solution.

Electronic magnifiers, such as a Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) or more portable Magnicam to allow the user to view documents in brilliant full color or in black and white, and increase the size of the image or text up to 60 times its original size. Some CCTVs connect to your desktop computer, providing you with the ability to display both computer and print images, either alternately or simultaneously on one monitor.
